New Words!

I remember that day when..

I learnt this new word and chose to blog about it!

Although i am fluent in English, yet it remains my second language and i get to enjoy learning new words and phrases from time to time.

Among the new words i just learnt is ‘edutainment’ ! Do you guys know what that means?

Well, according to merriam-webster,:

Definition of EDUTAINMENT: entertainment (as by games, films, or shows) that is designed to be educational

Origin of EDUTAINMENT: education + entertainment – First Known Use: 1973

This word is only 40 years old! That so cool! 😉

P.S. Ramadan Kareem to all Muslims out there!

Fifty Shades of Grey

I remember that day when..

I got hooked to ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ by E L James!

Its the romance, the speed, the excitement, the bonding, the negotiating, the character’s inner thoughts & fears, and finally the action (Note: this is a PG rated blog ;)).

Its all the above mixed with continuous curiosity of what’s going to happen next! As soon as I finished reading the first book, I immediately started the second.. and very soon I will read the 3rd which is the last of the trilogy!

All I can say… the book is a fun roller coaster ride! Hats off to E L James! 🙂

If I Had My Life to Live Over

I remember that day when…

I listed the things I would have wanted to do differently in my life..

As I was reading ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ mentioned previously here, one of the short stories mentions the list of things that the interviewed elderly and terminally ill people have answered to; the things they wish they would have done more of, and that gave me the idea to write my own list as well.

Here it goes:

If I had my life to live over, I would

1. Loosen up and act silly
2. Laugh loudly and more often
3. Enjoy the moment rather than wait for the future
4. Give more compliments
5. Just do without over thinking
6. Listen more talk less

And finally

7. Break more rules 😉

But you know what, thank God I’m still young enough to start changing my habits…. any idea how i can challenge myself and do more of the above?

Have A Great Valentine’s Weekend everyone! xoxo

Seven Laws of Success

I remember that day when..

I read ‘The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success’ by Deepak Chopra.

Here is another book i have recently read and enjoyed very much.  Its simple, easy to read, and fun.

SSLOS_book

The book talks about the seven “powerful principles you can use to fulfill your deepest desires with effortless joy. If you put them into practice, you’ll realize that you can manifest whatever you’ve been dreaming about.”

From my point of view, understanding the laws is easy, but it surely needs continuous practice, discipline, and patience to be able to see positive results in fulfilling your dreams.

My favorite part of the book is the ‘conclusion’ where it summarizes and connects all the laws together.  Here is the shortened version of it:

“There is a natural sequence for the application of these laws… The Law of Pure Potentiality is experienced… through communion with nature, but it is activated by the Law of Giving…  Through your actions in the Law of Giving you activate the Law of Karma… which automatically leads to an understanding the Law of Least Effort. When everything is easy and effortless… you spontaneously begin to understand the Law of Intention and Desire. Fulfilling your desires with effortless ease makes it easy for you to practice the Law of Detachment. Finally… you begin to focus on your true purpose in life, which leads to the Law of Dharma.

Now, how about we start practicing these laws in our daily life?

SHMILY

I remember that day when…

I received this story by email which has truly touched my heart 🙂

“My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “shmily” around the house, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more.

They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to await whoever was preparing the next meal. They smeared it in the dew on the windows overlooking the patio where my grandma always fed us warm, homemade pudding with blue food coloring.

“Shmily” was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. At one point, my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper to leave “shmily” on the very last sheet. There was no end to the places “shmily” would pop up.

Little notes with “shmily” scribbled hurriedly were found on dashboards and car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were stuffed inside shoes and left under pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel and traced in the ashes of the fireplace.

This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture. It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love —-one that is pure and enduring.

However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. They had love down pat. It was more than their flirtatious little games; it was a way of life. Their relationship was based on a devotion and passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience. Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could. They stole kisses as they bumped into each other in their tiny kitchen.

They finished each other’s sentences and shared the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble. My grandma whispered to me about how cute my grandpa was, how handsome and old he had grown to be. She claimed that she really knew “how to pick ’em.” Before every meal they bowed their heads and gave thanks, marveling at their blessings: a wonderful family, good fortune, and each other.

But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside.

Now the cancer was again attacking her body. With the help of a cane and my grandfather’s steady hand, they went to church every morning. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house anymore. For a while, Grandpa went to church alone, praying for God to watch over his wife. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone.

“SHMILY” There it was again—scrawled in bright yellow ink on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time.

Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s casket and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her very softly. Through his tears and grief, the old song came, a deep throaty lullaby. Shaking with my own sorrow, I will never forget that moment. For I knew that, although I couldn’t begin to fathom the depth of their love, I had been privileged to witness its unmatched beauty.”

The Power of Now

I remember that day when…

I was deeply inspired from reading ‘The Power of Now’!

I am sure you have noticed that i am a reader! I enjoy reading random books especially non-fictional novels and psychological / spiritual books.  My dear friend MG recommended that i read this book called ‘The Power of Now’ by author Echart Tolle; and while i was reading it, i was touched by a couple of lines that i decided that i wanted to share with you.

The book basically explains how to control your thoughts by staying conscious of the now and connect with your inner self. i will not go into much details but these are the parts that i wanted to share with you:

“If you find your here and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options:

1. remove yourself from the situation

2. change it

3. or accept it totally”

Tolle further explains that if you truly have no choice but to accept it totally, the way to accept is by “dropping all inner resistance…  This is called surrender… Through surrender, you will be free internally of the situation.  You may then find that the situation changes without any effort of your part. In any case, you are free.”

I hope this will help you as much as it helped me 🙂

Meeting John Gray

I remember that day when..

I met John Gray 😀

Dr. John Gray is the genius behind the book  ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ which is  the number one relationship book of all time! He wrote a total of 16 books to date in which i have very much enjoyed reading at least 5 or 6 of them.

I remember that it was Winter of 2011 when my husband showed me the ad. that John Gray was conducting a seminar in Kuwait. I got so excited that my husband immediately bought me ticket to attend 🙂

When the day of the seminar came, I remember it was held at the Crown Plaza hotel, and i arrived at the hall about 20 minutes early to make sure i got the best seat in the first row.  Luckily, i ran into my cousin H and he chose to sit next to me to get the second best seat in the first row 😉  The seminar was about an hour and a half, but it surely felt like 10 minutes.  It was fun, enjoyable and hilarious.  I especially enjoyed it when Dr. John related his newest book at that time to many of his personal experiences with both his anonymous clients and his wife.

Towards the end, i stood in line wanting to shake hands with the person who taught me so much about myself and everybody else around me.  While i was shaking his hand i told him that it was great meeting him, and that i was a huge fan who read 5 of his books.

His response was:  Awwww…. you deserve a hug!

And YES.. i got a hug from John Gray 😀

I am 110 years old!

I remember that day when..

I was 110 years old!

I recently finished reading a book titled Happier by Tel Ben-Shahar.  ‘Tal Ben-Shahar is an author and lecturer, teaching at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya.  He taught the largest course at Harvard on “Positive Psychology” and the third largest on “The Psychology of Leadership”—with a total of over 1,400 students.”

Anyway, the book is practically a guide on how to live happier and it includes a few practical exercises.  One exercise i would like to practice now is to imagine that i am 110 years old, what would my old self advise my younger self?

My advise to myself would be the following:

1.  Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy living each hour of everyday to the fullest

2.  Spend more time in the outdoors

3.  Introduce fun and different activities to your day

4.  Keep a positive attitude and maintain your positive thinking

5.  Give more

6.  Laugh more

7.  Meditate more

8.  and keep writing   🙂

What about you?  What would you advice yourself to do?
